Temporomandibular Joint Pain
Signs that your jaw is saying “I need help”:
- Pain in the jaw, ear, side of head are common symptoms of TMJ pain which are often worse with stress or eating (chewing and mouth opening).
- Numbness and tingling in one side of the face.
- Jaw locking, restriction in movement.
- Clicking/Popping/Grating when moving the jaw.
- Neck pain can be a symptom or source of TMJ pain. If the joints in the neck are restricted this can place increased load on the TMJ but also cause referred pain to the TMJ when there is no problem in the TMJ itself.
- The muscles in the face can also cause referred pain into the TMJ.
- Headaches are also a common feature of TMJ pain especially the side of the head.
- Other symptoms can be dizziness, shoulder pain, visual disturbances, earache.
- Throat muscles tire easily after singing or playing a musical instrument.
- Morning soreness due to teeth grinding.
