Race Report 25th September 2023

Sep 26, 2023

Make a brew, sit down and prepare yourself for this week’s Team Blizard race report as it is a bumper with some unbelievable performances!

Kicking off the week in the Flat and Fast 5k up in Edinburgh we saw Freddie Fearn smash through the 16 minute barrier with a superb 15.52 mins clocking. A massive well done to him as we identified this race back in May and he has worked towards it so it was a very sweet new personal best from him.

Next race to report from was the Tissington  half marathon which was held on both Saturday and Sunday over the 13.1 miles distance. There were eye catching performances from Yorkshire marathon bound Matt Taylor from Clowne Road Runners who went under 90 mins for the very first time as well as a personal best from Laith Flanagan and her fastest time since 2015 for Emma Smith to name just a few of the many who took part.

Sticking with the half marathon distance another new personal best was done in the Redcar half marathon from coached athlete Al Reid despite the coastal winds trying to slow him down!

A little nearer to home saw the ever popular Sheffield 10k take place over a hilly course but still we saw plenty of quality coming from Callum Ely, Toby Bellis, Wayne Singleton and Becky Middleton to name just a few that caught our eye in the results.

This time of year we see the running of the area road relays championships with the Midland Relays being held in Birmingham in Sutton Park.
It was great to see a return to racing from both Worksop Harrier Tom Shaw and Notts AC athlete Marti Whitehouse as both are regular training partner with the team week in and week out.

The Northern version took place over in Birkenhead, Liverpool with athletes competing for their respective clubs to try and earn a place in the national finals next month.
Rotherham Harriers Simon Oak and Chris Griffiths both gave good accounts of themselves while Portugal bound Danny James, Mike Skelton, Linz Fleming all ran well with an especially eye catching performance from coached athlete Seth Kirby who had been in for a test as recently as Thursday!

Saturday as always is Park Run day and there simply is too many park run results to mention but we are going to include Scarborough athlete Andy Hoppers brand new personal best and first time under 19 mins…well done that man!

The race report is not restricted just to the UK and the first of this season’s marathons took place in the German capital of Berlin.
Said to be the fastest course in the world lived up to its name with a new women's world record and treading on the same roads we saw our very own Matt Hamer complete in a very respectable time along with Retford athlete Danny Green with a special mention going to Becky Gallop and Oliver Crampton from Newark out of the Bill Taylor school of coaching who both ran really well and hopefully will now be sampling a few German beers!

The final race to report from was actually held on Wednesday and saw the first ever running of the Humberside 5k road championships on the new cycle track at Hull.
Racing machine Callum Ely once again used the race as hard training to record a good time in windy conditions while our very own Keri Pearson who is deep in marathon mode spun her legs to take the overall ladies victory which was an impressive run.
However, this weeks “Run of the Week” goes to Wolds Vet athlete Tracey Gibson who took the V55 ladies title.
Tracey will not mind us saying that when she came with the team out to Portugal she was not really running or enjoying her training and racing so much but she has worked hard to turn things around and using the data gathered in her lactate test has enabled her to progress up several runs of the fitness ladder and this is just the start!

Massive well done to everyone who raced and please forgive us if we have missed any results, there are simply too many of you running well to mention everyone and it is such a great problem to have!

Until next week……..keep training!
