In this newsletter, Jodie Antich, our clinical specialist physiotherapist in pelvic health will provide you with KEY FACTS about the menopause. Short term hot flushes and lack of sleep are minor in comparison to the long term negative changes you can take ACTION NOW to avoid.
There are key phases in the menopause. You need to know what they are and the steps to take to power through with positivity, minimising the impact on mind and body. Your future health relies on ACTION NOW.
GET Aware, STAY Aware and AGE Aware. Our key message is start early, your body and mind will thank you for it!
So grab a (decaff) coffee and read on…..
AND don’t forget to share with your friends and family too. Educate your partners and sons. Help them to understand and support everyone as a family.
What is the Menopause?
The term comes from Greek origins—"Meno" (month) and "pause" (cessation), meaning the end of monthly cycles.
A natural biological process by which hormones (oestrogen and progesterone) dip and menstrual periods stop. This usually occurs between the age of 45-55. However changes in hormones and onset of symptoms can begin in the years much earlier than this and is called the peri-menopause. This is a critical period for females to take action for their future.
Oestrogen and progesterone are also very important hormones for regulating our mood, emotional health, cognition and physical health.

How do I know if I am peri-menopausal or menopausal?
Premenopause:
The normal cycle of menstruation each month.
Perimenopause:
The phase where hormones begin to fluctuate and menstruation / periods begin to change. Fluctuations in mood, cognition, temperature, bodyweight, sleep also start to occur. This is where you really need to TAKE ACTION.
Menopause:
A set point in time when a lady has reached 12 consecutive months without menstruating.
Post menopause:
After the set point above. Oestrogen and Progesterone levels have dipped and remain low.
The statistics show what can happen if we do NOTHING…
-
Approx 63.2% of menopausal ladies experience bladder problems.
-
Starting at age 30 women lose 3-5% of muscle mass each decade, this accelerates from the age of 60, by 80 up to 50% of women have severe muscle loss. This affects all muscles of the body. Including those that support our bladder and bowel. It also affects balance and mobility increasing our risk of falls and injury.
-
Women who experience early menopause (before age 45) have a 36% higher risk of fractures compared to those with normal menopause timing, (due to declining oestrogen levels which directly affects bone density).
-
Women are 2.27 times more likely to experience urinary leakage after menopause than before.
-
Up to 63% of women experience sleep issues as a result of the menopause.
-
Cognitive processing speed declines after menopause, with noticeable reductions starting around age 52.
